Pendulum Basics

Why the pendulum
Many find it easier to accept the use of ‘divining tools’ in looking for such things as water, used on and off for thousands of years, rather than using a pendulum to discover causes of illness or to imagine receiving information about self-healing. “Yet these ‘divining tools’ also make connection to higher conscious awareness, the all seeing, and all knowing aspect of every person’s nature. There is no one in the world that does not have direct communication with God Consciousness. The pendulum is the first step toward Gnosis (knowing experientially that which is beyond intellectual knowing) or retrieval of spiritual Truths, not belief. Belief is just that – a notion that is usually formed through a third party influence.”1 The pendulum is an accessible and simple tool available to reawaken your intuition, connection to your Higher Self and the power greater than your intellect.

The pendulum, connecting with the higher power of internal realms is like meeting a friend who has the ability to see and know from a much higher vantage point and knows what is optimal in all aspects of your life - an impeccable counseling agent. With reliance on a strong connection using the pendulum, the experience is empowering when you are serious about listening to and following this system of guidance.

History
The oldest record of dowsing dates from 6,000 B.C.E. in the Algerian Tassili Cave paintings depicting stylized human figures holding forked sticks. The Chinese used them over 4,000 years ago and the Romans over 2,000 years ago.

Construction and/or Purchasing a Pendulum
Pendulums are made of various materials such as pointed crystals, heavy beads or metal fishing sinkers. These can be strung with fishing line, thread, and cord or light chain. Personal innovation has led people to use a ring on dental floss, a paper clip on a rubber band and even a chain pull from a ceiling fan. Ideally, pendulums work most efficiently if they are approximately 6 to 8 inches in length. It is optimal for pendulums to be symmetrical, evenly balanced and heavy enough to not be easily affected by the slightest movements, but not so heavy as to make your arm tired when using.

If you purchase a pendulum, choose one that attracts you by a feeling, what it looks like, by a particular stone, gem or color. Note if it evokes peacefulness, feels grounding to you or evokes a sense of appreciation being in your company. If you have already established the ability to receive clear ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers you can hold one of your selections and ask it if it is the optimal pendulum for you. Continue to check in with it occasionally to confirm that it remains the most beneficial, as it is sometimes optimal to release, change or add other pendulums.

Using a Pendulum
To begin:

The best way to hold a pendulum is between your thumb and as many fingers as possible, relax the wrist, fingers pointing down so your hand mimics a waterfall and rest your elbow on a table or arm of a chair. Hold the pendulum at the midline of the body so it is easy to read in relationship to the movement. Be aware of breathing deeply, relaxing your entire body, especially the jaw, before you ask to receive information. All of this will assist you in creating the strongest possible connection. To check the importance of breathing deeply, try holding your breath and watch the responsiveness of the pendulum. Then breathe deeply and freely to experience the difference in response.

First ask the pendulum to show you a clear sign for ‘yes.’ Wait for a response as you repeat the question in your mind until your pendulum begins to move. Do not anticipate a particular movement, just relax and watch as it prepares to communicate with you. After it moves in a clearly definable pattern, ask, “Please show me a clear no.” Again, wait without anticipating how the pendulum will move. After it establishes another clear pattern of movement, check the Pendulum Movement Chart to see if the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ signals are consistent with those on the chart.

Universal Signing
The universal sign for ‘yes’ is movement toward and away from you or clockwise circles, and the universal sign for ‘no’ is side-to-side movement or counter-clockwise circles. If the pendulum moves on a diagonal, you can use the pendulum movement chart to determine what the diagonal movement is referring to by asking, “Do you want me to restate the question?” “Is the information not available at this time?” “Is this not appropriate subject matter?” “Is there more detailed information you would like me to receive from a facilitator?”

Switching
While first establishing the ‘yes/no’ movements, if your movements are opposite of the universal system, you are what is called switched. Only about 2% to 3% of the population is energetically structured to receive information in a switched mode. There is no specific reason for the switched state of experience. It is not necessary to change the switched system unless you are working in a group setting where others would be confused by seeing your pendulum work opposite of theirs. It keeps things on a common plane for everyone to use the same system, and a facilitator can assist in realigning your mode of reception if it is optimal.
